Reviews

John Singer Sargent is primarily renowned for his protrait paintings. While these works-often featuring wealthy and self satisfied looking subjects-are worth investigating, I found many of the paintings featured in this volume more enjoyable to view. The works, painted between 1883-1899, frequently demonstrate the influence of the impressionist school. They are colorful, vibrant and easy on the eye. Although they have an individual voice, they are sometimes reminiscent of Monet's creations. Valuably, this volume documents the correspondence between Monet and Sargent.Additional to the impressionist style paintings, there are a number of oil and watercolors executed during Sargent's travels to places such as Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Scotland and Spain. There are also copies after artists like Titian, El Greco Tiepolo etc. This volume continues the high standards of documentation and research encountered in previous volumes of this series. The printing standard and quality of color reproduction are well above average. Warmly recommended.
